5 Tips to Avoid Dry or Cracking Skin

It’s no secret that for many of us, winter can be rough on our skin. Given the current state of the world right now, it’s safe to say that many of us have been washing our hands more often than we are used to doing. Now, while that may be good for our health, it is not the best thing for our skin, especially during the winter months. In keeping with that notion, here are five helpful tips on avoiding dry and/or cracked skin.

Wear Gloves

While this one may seem silly at first glance, it is surprisingly effective. For many of us, during the winter months, the first place we notice dry skin is our hands. Wearing gloves during this time can really reduce the chances of dry skin. Simply slip them on when you go outdoors or while doing tasks in which your hands may or may not get wet. It can even be beneficial to wear gloves while sleeping.

Avoid Heat

Now, it goes without saying that we all want to keep warm during the winter. After all, nothing beats bundling up in front of a warm fireplace, however you might not want to stay near that fireplace too long. Staying near an open fire or any other heat source for a long period of time can also cause dry or cracked skin. No matter how inviting that fireplace may be, a safer and cozier alternative to staying warm would be bundling up with hats, blankets, scarves, etc.

Avoid Products with Fragrance

Who doesn’t want to smell good? Many of us use products with fragrance including but not limited to soap and/or deodorant. However, these products are actually very harsh on dry and/or sensitive skin. It is actually recommended by dermatologist to use “fragrance-free” labeled products. These products however are not to be confused with “unscented” products. Products with the “unscented” label may contain chemicals that neutralize or hide the odors of other ingredients causing irritation on your skin.

Use a Humidifier

If you have a humidifier, use it! Adding heat and moisture in your home can greatly reduce the risk of dry skin.
